Community Forester III, Sacramento Tree Foundation (Sacramento, CA)

The Sacramento Tree Foundation is seeking a uniquely balanced person – someone who is a tree expert, is passionate about urban forestry, and believes that community action is critical to improving our region’s environmental health. This position is focused on teaching the value of trees to the public and providing science-based expertise on best practices related to urban forestry.

The primary responsibility of the Community Forester III is to support people in their effort to grow and maintain our region’s tree canopy. Through the development and delivery of educational courses, as well as educational materials, this position teaches the public about the inextricable links between a healthy, well cared for urban forest and a community’s quality of life. The Community Forester III will support the Sacramento Shade program with tree siting and appointment scheduling duties as needed. This position is central to supporting Tree Foundation’s mission and value we place on community outreach, neighborhood activation, and civic engagement.


Community Education 35%

Lead workshops, clinics, and presentations on young tree care best practices such as pruning, watering, etc.
Support the development, implementation, and distribution of educational materials in print and electronic forms.
Identify and attend community events and other outreach opportunities appropriate to market Tree Foundation programs and offer educational opportunities.
Build and maintain relationships with neighborhood groups and public partners to support community planting projects.
Work with Tree Foundation’s “NeighborWoods” team to grow community leadership and action throughout the region.
Lead and support tree planting events – held on weekends – including coordination with partners and volunteer management

Sacramento Shade Program Support 35%

Meet with constituents in the field or remotely – to strategically site tree planting locations and species that will provide the greatest community benefit (such as: energy savings, urban cooling, improved public health). Includes some weekend site assessments.
Provide appropriate and clear information to the customer regarding planting and care techniques. Educate customers on the importance of proper tree placement and survival.
Support the ongoing effort to improve the Sacramento Shade program by refining best practices, talking points and use of technology.
Maintain accurate records of activities in applicable formats.
Support with scheduling when needed.

Technical Leadership 15%

Review current and prospective projects.
Stay current on arboreal and urban forest issues in the Sacramento region, and relay knowledge to staff and the public through presentations and documentation.
Help to facilitate the Technical Advisory Committee.
Develop and maintain relationships with relevant urban forestry professionals to grow the organization’s reach.
Periodically update the Tree Foundation’s online resources – Shady 80 tree guide, seasonal tree tips, etc.

Administrative 15%

Write an annual work plan that includes measurable goals.
Answer technical inquiries from residents, partners, and the public regarding tree care techniques and resources.
Carefully manage a daily calendar (via Outlook and Salesforce) to meet constituent needs, special requests, and office work.
Supervise volunteers and/or interns.
Maintain assigned company vehicle including cleanliness and routine maintenance.
Work as part of a team to implement the Tree Foundation’s mission to build the best regional urban forest.
Other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, forestry, biological sciences, education or related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 3 years experience in the urban forestry/arboriculture field. ISA Certified Arborist strongly preferred. Experience with non-profit organizations and staff oversight preferred.

SKILLS: Candidate should possess flexibility, time management skills, good judgment, strong communication skills and the ability to work autonomously and interact with diverse audiences. Must have a Class C driver’s license. Experience with technology such as Salesforce and GIS is a plus. Bilingual/multilingual (Spanish, Hmong, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Cantonese, Russian) abilities preferred.

TEMPERAMENT: Must be organized and provide detailed record-keeping and extensive customer follow-up. Must be comfortable working in a mission-based, non-profit environment. The ideal candidate for the position will have a passion for our mission and a commitment to excellent customer service.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No formal supervisory role but may supervise interns or volunteers. This role could grow to a staff supervisorial capacity.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends.Able to lift 30 pounds.Both outdoor and in office work is required for this position. Therefore, employee may be exposed to extremes in weather including heat, rain, and freezing temperatures as well as extended periods of sitting and standing.
