This is supervisory work in the direction of crews assigned to maintain municipal urban forest and landscape maintenance and installation, planting of plants, as well as fence maintenance and repair functions.
An employee in this class is responsible for planning, assigning, and inspecting the work of multiple crews involved in tree and plant maintenance, and removal, landscape maintenance, landscape fertilization, pest control and replacement.
This employee also oversees fence maintenance and installation. Work involves personal participation in the maintenance and construction of all levels of activities. Incumbent provides detailed training in new procedures, equipment, and chemicals to subordinates.
Work is performed under the direction of the Public Works Environmental Services Superintendent with the employee expected to complete assignments without immediate supervision. Supervision is exercised over a group of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled subordinates.
REQUIRED – Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, plus five (5) years experience in horticulture, tree maintenance, landscape maintenance, nursery operations and/or landscape installations.
Must obtain certified arborist status from the International Society of Arboriculture (ANSI) within six (6) months of hire/promotion. Must also obtain certification as a restricted-use pesticide applicator by the State of Florida within six (6) months of hire/promotion.
Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.
PREFERRED – Associate’s Degree plus certification as an arborist supplemented by two (2) years experience in horticulture, tree maintenance, landscape maintenance, nursery operations and/or landscape installations.
